We have recently begun sponsoring FIRST Robotics Team 5985 of Project Bucephalus. The team were thrilled after their performance in the Southern Cross Regional Event this month. They are progressing and competing at the FIRST World Championships in Houston in April.
About the team
The team is a part of the FIRST Robotics Program. FIRST is an acronym for ‘For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.’ FIRST is an international program for children focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) learning experiences.
They are an independent community-based team, with members consisting of students from Wollongong. Students come from all academic backgrounds, such as public, private, selective, and home-schooled. The team is achieving 50% female membership balanced throughout all leadership and operations aspects.
The FIRST Team 5985 is competitive internationally, becoming an award-winning group in Australian and International competitions. They won the Engineering Inspiration award for the Turing Division at the 2022 FIRST World Championships. They have also received the Reginal Chairman’s Award five times in the six years they were eligible.
The Southern Cross Regional Event this month was no exception. After unveiling their robot and competing in the regional event, they won the Judges Award and a Dean’s List finalist. Setting the tone for their event in April, they will compete at the Silicon Valley Regional in San Jose, California. This is in addition to the FIRST World Championship held in Houston, Texas. They are going to give the competition a challenge!
