Keeping widely dispersed assets connected is a critical part of any modern SCADA or industrial IoT program. Low power wide area networks (LPWAN) have emerged as a practical way to collect data from field sensors and remote plants without the complexity and cost of fibre or traditional radio networks. Two of the most popular LPWAN options—LoRaWAN and NB IoT—offer different capabilities that suit different applications. In this article we explain when to choose each technology and how our team at Triple i designs long‑distance telemetry across large industrial sites.

Why SCADA on Large Sites Needs LPWAN

SCADA systems need reliable, cost‑effective connectivity. Traditional cellular and Wi‑Fi networks work well for high‑speed devices but often struggle with coverage and power constraints across large sites. LPWAN technologies provide:

  • Extended range. LoRaWAN links can reach up to 15‑20 kilometres in open environments, and our own IIoT solutions achieve 7 km in open space and 2‑3 km indoors. NB IoT operates on licensed spectrum through mobile operators and provides robust indoor coverage.

  • Low power consumption. Both LoRaWAN and NB IoT devices sleep between transmissions to conserve energy. LoRaWAN devices typically consume less power and can deliver battery life of 15 + years compared with 10 years for NB IoT. This makes LoRaWAN suitable for remote sensors in hard‑to‑reach places.

  • Reduced bandwidth. These networks send small packets of data at low rates, ideal for monitoring temperatures, pressures or status signals. LoRaWAN offers bandwidth from 0.3 kbps to 50 kbps, while NB IoT supports higher throughputs up to 200 kbps.

  • Resilience and scalability. LPWAN architectures allow thousands of devices to connect to a single gateway. Because sensors operate independently, the network can tolerate outages and still store data for later upload.

When LoRaWAN is The Right Choice

LoRaWAN is often the preferred option when you want strong local control of your own private industrial wireless network. On many Triple i projects, LoRaWAN suits clients who need: 

  • Private infrastructure on site
    You can deploy your own gateways on buildings, towers or mobile equipment and tune coverage exactly where SCADA needs it. This works well for refineries, steelworks, manufacturing campuses and water treatment precincts.

  • Very low power devices
    Battery powered field sensors can achieve long life because LoRaWAN is optimised for infrequent, low data rate communications. This is ideal for condition monitoring, tank levels, valve positions and environmental sensing.

  • Flexible integration into SCADA
    LoRaWAN gateways connect easily into existing control architecture, data historians and analytics platforms. Combined with Triple i data and analytics solutions, clients can visualise LoRaWAN device data alongside core SCADA points without creating a separate data island. 

  • Coverage tailored to complex layouts
    Large plants rarely have perfect line of sight. Our engineers model building layouts, structures and terrain to position LoRaWAN gateways so that SCADA data remains available even in dense process areas or behind heavy equipment.

When NB IoT Delivers More Value

NB IoT uses carrier networks to deliver LPWAN coverage. For some SCADA environments that makes it the better strategic choice. Triple i typically recommends NB IoT where: 

  • Assets are extremely remote
    Pipelines, bore fields, well heads and isolated pumping stations may sit far beyond site boundaries. Using NB IoT avoids building and maintaining your own communication backbone across those distances.

  • Telco coverage is already strong
    If reliable cellular coverage is available, NB IoT lets you onboard devices rapidly without installing local gateways. This reduces capital cost and speeds up proof of concept deployments for SCADA extensions.

  • You want simple national scale
    For organisations with multiple sites across Australia, NB IoT can provide a consistent communication layer that ties all those small telemetry points back into central SCADA and enterprise systems.

  • You need carrier grade service options
    Managed SIMs, service level commitments and carrier monitoring provide another layer of assurance that complements the industrial network and communications services Triple i already delivers.

How Triple i Designs LPWAN Coverage for SCADA
