Thermal Flow Sensors
Method
Thermal flow sensors operate on a straightforward principle: when a fluid flows over a heated element, it cools the element down. The amount of heat loss is proportional to the flow rate. By either measuring the heat loss or the power needed to maintain a wire at a specific temperature, you can accurately gauge the flow rate.
These sensors are typically simple insertion devices that can be installed via a tapping point into your pipe or ductwork, making them quick and easy to install.
Advantages
- Cost-effective for straightforward applications
- No moving parts
- Simple and non-intrusive installation
Disadvantages
- Primarily suited for gas or air applications, though some switch models can be used with water and oils
- Less accurate than other sensor types
- Not ideal for applications with rapid temperature changes
