This means a change in how this data is gathered, stored, analysed, and accessed. When you have low latency data there is a need to contextualise and normalise the information.

Real Time Business Intelligence is delivered at the plant production level, where real time response can deliver improved outcomes. Data is then made available to IT platforms as a true representation of what is occurring.

Strategy

No matter what the objective is, any plan needs a strategy for implementation.

Here there are usually additional considerations required due to the simple fact that organisations don’t have the information that will be identified.  Unless the exact same process, run the same way, with the same equipment has been done before, RTBI customers don’t know what they don’t know.

So, a very clear objective is essential, however the approach needs to be very flexible especially in software, tools and access to skills and operational knowledge.

The usual rules of rubbish in = rubbish out apply.

The data needs to be trusted. Ideally the data will be accurate however the more important aspect is that information is consistent for the situation being analysed.

RTBI needs dictate that data from multiple sources need to be unified as when you’re dealing with data at high resolution variances will affect outcomes.

Benchmark

You cannot determine the improvement achieved unless you know what was happening before. The total output per day will be obvious in existing reports, however for RTBI, the analysis of how and where variations reducing this output occurred is important.

Benchmarking requires high-resolution time-based production data, not just operational data.

A historian recording the data required in the resolution needed is high value in continual improvement and optimisation.

Applications with high data latency can get information from several sources with limited consideration on how and where the information is processed.

The timing aspects are critical in RTBI applications.

The transformation of data to information requires design. Software needs to be adaptable and support direct transfer of information on the OT level.

We define analytic as Diagnostic, Predictive, Prescriptive and Cognitive. RTBI is enhanced with higher levels of analytics, however in practical terms the combination of Predictive with Prescriptive Analytics is used together rather than one level then the other. Sometimes weak AI rules are used to identify trusted data issues.

When you have high volumes of data the presentation of the analytics to allow effective human decision making requires more than dashboards.

Data Mining - RTBI

Data mining is the process of finding anomalies, patterns, and correlations within large data sets to predict outcomes.

The selection and use of these tools need to consider the synchronisation of trusted data. When using real time data in manufacturing processes it is important to remove or filter data that is not associated with production of the same output. For example, if the production line makes different products, only compare data for comparable products.

We use defined and undefined relationships and correlation tools as part of our AI strategies.

Reporting -RTBI

Reporting

Reporting will occur in different stages, forms, and levels. Dashboards provide an overview but reporting the detail in a simply understood form is also needed.

A shift report nominating that you achieved 95% utilisation can be supplemented with a report that shows what the other 5% was lost to, and equally important, when in the shift it occurred.

One aspect of reporting that needs to be enhanced in real time applications is how to alert people to issues or potential problems. These are often the output from analysis and/or AI applications.

Distribution and access to alerts that require real time response needs to be in the solution offered.
