Andy has just finished his Electrical Apprenticeship qualification with HVTC and Triple i to become a qualified Electrician. We caught up with him to see how he feels about finishing his four-year apprenticeship. He completed a Certificate III: Electrotechnology Electrician Course.
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO DO AN APPRENTICESHIP?
I saw it as a terrific opportunity to get started in a challenging career with plenty of room to grow and the chance to progress in the future. Electrical, specifically the industrial electrical industry, seemed like the perfect fit.
WHAT WAS A TYPICAL DAY OR JOB LIKE?
I was lucky to experience a lot of variety over my electrical apprenticeship, so most days were different. From smaller jobs involving basic electrical tasks like lighting and maintenance to large-scale industrial projects. These incorporate design, fabrication and installation of process control, power distribution, communications, and instrumentation.
WHAT WERE THE BENEFITS OF YOUR ELECTRICAL APPRENTICESHIP?
The major benefit of my apprenticeship was being able to learn a wide range of skills. I gained knowledge from a very experienced group of tradesmen who were happy to pass on their skills and knowledge.
HOW HAS THE SUPPORT BEEN FROM TRIPLE I AND HVTC?
Throughout the apprenticeship Triple i was great. Making sure I was learning what I needed to and getting to experience a wide range of work and environments. HVTC was good, particularly in the last 12 months, making sure I was organised and prepared for my Capstone Test. This was to obtain my electrician’s License and ensure I was set up for success.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A NEW APPRENTICE?
My advice would be to get involved and ask plenty of questions. Most people are happy to share their knowledge if you show interest.
